Council approved construction on Prince Charles Drive, starting this month, last about a year
Approval has been granted by Welland city council to proceed with construction of a new fire station on Prince Charles Drive.
Work starts this month, less than 2kms from the older fire hall, costing just under $6.2-million.
Fire Chief Adam Eckhart admitted future additions won't be possible because of the size of property. "There is opportunity to work within the confines of it, and we designed the building in that way to house trucks that will pass the MTO legal road requirements. In other words, if it can drive under the bridges, and it can drive in the lanes of traffic, that truck bay will hold it."
It's expected to take Niacon Ltd about a year to build.
The Chief added it's an improvement of the older one, and mirror energy requirements.
"Energy performances to be respectful of our demand on energy, as well as our costs to operate the building. It will also support the health and well being of our fire fighters, and the timely dispatch and deployment of our fire apparatus."
The Chief also said they are currently within budget.
