Turkstra and Credit Union big contributors, but also individuals raised over $14,000 to help people who have nothing after floods
Turkstra Lumber one of many groups helping during yesterday's Day of Giving, supporting those who lost everything in the floods.
President Jon Wagner says they want to help with building supplies that people are needing. "5% off anything people buy in our stores. And, along with that as a way to give back, for all the purchases people make, we'll take 5% of all that value and give it to local charity."
Not only that, but Turkstra donated $10,000 to Community Cares. "It's something we felt we could do, we could afford, we have money set aside from our own foundation, that we were able to help some of the people that really, really needed it."
First Ontario Credit Union also gave $10,000, but over $14,000 from 200 other donors, for roughly $43,000 for FeedNiagara.
During the day we had a number of guests encouraging donations, and telling their stories.
Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati tells us when he realized his basement was in trouble. "I could hear something downstairs, I could see it coming in, I started with the wet/dry vac, and I realized I was losing this battle big time. I had to let it go and do its thing."
He says the city will pay up to $4,000 to help fix a home, including back flow valve. "To put in your basement, where they come in and rip up your floor, to put in, and that's to ensure that things don't flow backwards into your house. I have mine going in this week. The city will also pay toward a sump pump."
