More pressure on the provincial government for flood relief money to St. Catharines home owners impacted by summer flooding.
St. Catharines NDP MPP Jennie Stevens said a recent survey asked 450 people how they were doing. "Over 60% of the residents are still in limbo over insurance claims. Seniors and vulnerable families are drowning in repair bills for fears of losing their homes. This government says it needs data... well, there's your data."
Municipal Affairs Minister Rob Flack said over a billion dollars in private insurance has been paid in Ottawa and Niagara. "DRAO (Disaster Recovery Assistance for Ontario) is not insurance, it is there to support those people who are in dire need. Bottom line is, DRAO was not activated because it was not overland water, it was sewer backup."
The government is still reviewing who is eligible for emergency relief in Niagara.
