The concerns of people living near the old GM plant in St. Catharines brought before the Ontario government this week.
MPP Jennie Stevens asked for the Environmental Protection Act to be used on contaminants and PCBs. "The city has now taken action within its authority, but municipalities cannot shoulder the financial burden of the remediation alone. The province already has enforce tools to hold polluters accountable."
Minister of Environment Todd McCarthy said the government has been working on this, PCBs are no longer a problem, but monitoring continues. "This matter was referred to our Ministry of Environment for potential investigation. As this matter may be subject to investigation, it would be inappropriate to speculate further."
Jennie Stevens says people want action now, and no more finger pointing.
