The Canadian Coast Guard opened its new $7.6 million dollar search and rescue station in Port Weller, in the north end of St. Catharines on the shore of Lake Ontario.
The facility will play a critical role in saving lives and assisting mariners in distress.
The project included the restoration and preservation of the 1931 former lighthouse keeper’s dwelling, a recognized federal heritage building.
The new facility includes a large workshop for vessel repairs, maintenance, and winter storage, along with on-site living accommodations for duty crews, including five bedrooms, a kitchen, spacious common areas, a laundry room, and an exercise area.
A new “Ready Room” provides immediate access to search and rescue equipment, reducing emergency response time. Designed similarly to a fire station, this dedicated space supports the organized storage and rapid deployment of gear during emergencies.
