Niagara Farms Holding Steady: Report

The Region told more potentially coming

It appears farming in the Niagara Region is holding steady.

Economic Development Officer Matthew McGinty told the economic development committee as of 2021, there were over 1,600 farms in the region, with more potentially coming.

He says Niagara farmers appreciate the region's involvement, as they battle macro and micro economic forces.  "If we can get over some of the high capital costs that it takes to get farmers into the business of tech adoption, and I believe that through the federal government's food strategy there will be some grants and initiatives to help get new technology into the hands of farmers that'll help make them more profitable."

He told the region data for the last 5-years is coming.

Mayor, Councillor Wayne Redekop is surprised at the funding used to support farmers in the region.

He was told last year $15,000 was spent, of a roughly $2.8-million economic development budget.

McGinty reassured the councillor when asked about losing farmland to development.  "I believe that in the Niagara Region, there is a strong desire to preserve our agricultural lands, and from what I see, I believe the farmers will fight to keep their land, it's a thriving sector here."
