Robin McPherson understands community frustration
A St. Catharines city councillor confirming it'll take time to figure out what to do with the former GM plant site on Ontario Street, and make the entire street more inviting.
Robin McPherson says a public meeting at the Holiday Inn showed extensive cleanup is needed, after a century of auto making.
She adds developers need to know what the community expects. "Also help them to look at the property, and how they can develop it. I understand the community's frustration at the site, but things are developing there, it's just that things are not visible to everyone."
It's about making the whole street more attractive to head into the downtown.
She adds the Ontario government is strict on cleaning practices. "I've certainly toured sites across the country, that have similar industrial uses, and they have been cleaned, deemed safe by the Ministry of the Environment. It can be done."
She says they need to figure out what types of residential could go in there.
