Budget resulted in a 10.5 percent property tax hike with the Niagara Region
Plenty of boos and some name calling from angry residents during Monday night's council meeting in St. Catharines.
They were hoping for discussion on a hiring freeze brought forth by Councillor Joe Kushner, in an effort to deal with a 10-percent property tax hike.
When that motion failed, Councillor Dawn Dodge appealed again for discussion.
"We've had a huge outcry from the public, and mortgage rates have gone up, taxes are going up. We've had so much detriment because of COVID-19, and I think we need to be able to pivot."
Her appeal was lost in a 7-6 vote, leading to more anger in the crowd.
The tax increase means a home worth just over $250,000 will pay an extra $400 in taxes.
