Proposal would combine independently operating transit systems in St. Catharines, Fort Erie, Welland, and Niagara Falls, as well as Niagara Region Transit and NRT OnDemand, if passed.
Niagara Regional Council has voted in favour of a proposal to combine all of the region's public transit services into one single commission serving all of Niagara.
A meeting was held on Thursday to discuss the issue.
As part of the Moving Transit Forward proposal, local transit systems in St. Catharines, Niagara Falls, Welland and Fort Erie, along with NRT OnDemand and Niagara Region Transit, would be brought together.
Officials say riders would get better connections, new digital payment technology and consistent operating hours.
However, the vote is only the first step in the process.
Officials say starting the week of December 6th, all of Niagara's 12 municipalities will vote on the proposal.
The plan will move forward if a majority of those councils vote in favour of the plan.
Earlier this fall, a public online survey with over 2,200 responses from residents, showed 79 percent of respondents supported the proposal.
More information on the proposal can be found here.
