UPDATE: Thousands of people are in the dark in Niagara this morning.
Outages have been reported in St. Catharines, Welland, Fort Erie and Port Colborne.
Alectra Utilities says about 409 homes and businesses are without power in St. Catharines. This is in the Highway 406 to Welland Canals Parkway area, and in the Queenston Street and Glendale Ave area.
Crews would like to have the power restored by 9:00 a.m.
Meanwhile Canadian Niagara Power is trying to restore the hydro for about 5,000 customers in the Port Colborne and Fort Erie area.
There is no restoration time available for that area.
Canadian Niagara Power was trying to restore the hydro for about 5,600 customers, as of 4:30 a.m.
Some of them could be without power for up to eight hours, as crews try to fix the distribution system.
