MPP takes over 4,000 names wanting Douglas Memorial hours to be 24/7 again
If you signed a petition calling for the Ontario government to restore non stop service at Douglas Memorial in Fort Erie, it's been delivered.
As Niagara Falls NDP MPP Wayne Gates held the 4,000 names, he said the health minister didn't give an answer as to when service will be restored.
He also stressed the dire need. "I know of one man, who suffered a heart attack, who was rushed to Douglas Memorial, where the staff was able to stabilize him, and send him to Hamilton for open-heart surgery. I'm happy to say that today he is still alive."
He added the province must use emergency funding to restore around the clock service.
Gates stood with Heather Kelly, from Niagara Health Care SOS, who acknowledged the new hospital under construction in Niagara Falls, but then she turned her attention to winter. "I don't know how many people have been to Fort Erie in a winter storm, but you get to Sodom Road, and that seems to be the weather line. You either can get in, or you can't get in at all. There are days when that Queen Elizabeth Way is closed."
Niagara Health says it cut overnight service due to lack of staff, something Gates blames lack of government funding for.
