Council approved 644 new signs for 40kms/hour
If you're driving around in Welland, be ready to drop your speed to 40kms an hour, as of October 30th.
Last night city council approved installation of 644 signs, from 50kms, a request first made by Councillor John Chiocchio in 2019.
He said speeding is a top complaint, with residents putting up their own signs. "Some people say what's the difference between 40 and 50kms.... 10kms... that's the difference. So, nobody liked when seatbelts came in, nobody liked when we weren't able to use our phones in the car."
Councillor Graham Speck was against, saying people complain about speeding at 70, not 50kms.
Prior to the vote, Councillor Sharmila Setaram noted for her it's all about keeping people safe. "And that's something we can help increase. And, on the provincial website, it shows that pedestrians generally have a 50% chance of survival at speeds of 40 to 45kms/hour, and I'll take that."
Councillor Bryan Greene added it's not the best solution, but it's a step.
