Dr. Mustafa Hirji says Premier should have waited at least another week to announce lifting capacity requirements.
Niagara's top doctor is concerned about the province's decision to lift capacity requirements for businesses such as gyms, casinos and restaurants.
Dr. Mustafa Hirji told reporters today that he thinks Premier Doug Ford should have waited at least another week to make the announcement.
"I think you need the balance of this week before you can say yes, we're through Thanksgiving, we haven't see a rise in cases and it's safe to maybe do the next step of lifting measures."
Hirji also says he feels a lot of loopholes remain surrounding vaccine certification, including not requiring staff at businesses such as gyms or restaurants to be fully vaccinated.
"If you go out to have dinner, you'll be inside a crowded restaurant now. Everybody who is dining will be fully vaccinated, assuming they are supposed to be fully vaccinated. But the person coming and serving you is going to be face to face with you isn't going to be fully vaccinated. And I think the province should have taken this as an opportunity to bring a requirement for those staff to be vaccinated as well."
Effective 12:01 this morning, the Ford government ended restrictions on indoor settings that require proof of vaccination.
