City of Welland installing beacons on stop signs, too many complaints about drivers
Flashing red lights will be put on top of stop signs at the corner of Forkes Road and Elm Street, east and west.
Welland councillor Bonnie Fokkens says people are asking for it, due to poor driving habits and accidents.
Councillor Graham Speck agreed, adding they tried similar ideas at Golden Boulevard East. "There's still some driver error, even with the flashing beacon. But, as other councillors pointed out, do we need to wait for accidents? I have been in Dain City, I have spoken to residents there, I hear the complaints directly."
Many councillors said the nominal cost is not worth considering if stopping an accident.
Councillor Fokkens says speeding is an issue there, but city staff say the current stop sign is adequate for the road conditions.
She was not looking for that answer. "We had a child hit on a bicycle this summer at that corner. We've had owners' cars hit, their garages hit, a lot of the ditches staff had to come and remove the stop sign."
Councillor Tony DiMarco noted driving habits are getting worse, making the red flashers worth it.
