Staff report indicates transit levy could cause a 31 percent increase for taxpayers in Welland
The City of Welland says it's concerned about the cost of an integrated transit system.
A special council meeting was held last night to discuss the impact of the Niagara Regional Transit levy on taxpayers in Welland.
The report shows an estimated 31 percent increase for this year.
Mayor Frank Campion says while council supports the transit system, a 30 percent tax hike is unacceptable.
"On several occasions, we asked for updates on the proposed financial model and capital costs, because we wanted to ensure we knew the impact on the Welland taxpayer. As a Council, we have always supported the integration of a consolidated transit system, but an increase to the Welland taxpayer by 30 per cent is unacceptable and does not reflect what was proposed during the triple majority vote."
While there is no financial levy to the city, the 2023 Regional levy will have an impact on residents.
