Councillor Carmen DeRose will bring this forward next month
A local homelessness advocate is pleased the City of Thorold is moving forward to try and address problems faced by people with addictions.
Steven Soos says Councillor Carmen DeRose is bringing forth a motion on May 12th, asking for a Mental Health and Addictions advisory committee for the city. "We could have people on that committee who have experience working in that sector, or have lived experience with mental health and addictions. So, we want the province to start getting serious about these issues and start funding them better."
He says there's no committee for this, while there is one for homelessness and one for affordable housing.
The city declared a State of Emergency over homelessness and addiction, and he says this is the next step.
He says it would advise city council of what to do. "I've tried to speak to the region about it, and there seems to not be a flavour for that right now. I would like to see this passed in Thorold, so we can set a precedent, and have other municipalities join in on creating similar measures."
He says he and a number of other advocates will address council that night.
