A 2-term Welland city councillor is going for mayor because he's not happy with how the city has been run.
Graham Speck says he's spent 8-years working hard, often clashing with the current administration. "I understand how the system works, I know what is required to make the city work for all the residents of Welland. I'm hoping for peoples' support for a candidate that has consistently pushed back against the status quo."
He has 7-items of concern in his platform, but the budget is the first thing he'll deal with. "Seeing all the major budgetary items, the capital, operational and the water and sewer rates... going through that with a fine toothed comb."
Homelessness, bringing more jobs, and protecting agriculture also included in his platform.
"What's the most that we do? A.... trying to remove items to save taxpayers money, or... looking at the options. It's like buying a car and considering the options. Well, they all cost money."
He also wants to look at how city hall is run, in order to help council make decisions. "We have too many 7-6 decisions at council, too many very close calls. I would like to see more 2/3, more 3/4... I'd like to see more consensus."
He also wants to look at zoning by-laws, in order to help with parking at developments.
He's running for mayor against David Clow, Gary Graziani, David McLeod, Natashia Bergen, April Jeffs, Pat Chiocchio, and Brandon Simon.
