The province of Ontario has announced $115 million towards training students studying to become personal support workers.
Premier Doug Ford announced today that the funds will be used to train 8200 personal support workers, in a move to also ensure high quality care of residents of long-term care homes.
"This is one of the largest PSW recruitment and training drives ever in this country's history. This represents the biggest increase in PSW training capacity in a generation."
The Accelerated PSW Training Program, which is slated to start in April, will provide tuition-free training to 6,000 students, and is expected to take six months to complete instead of the usual eight months.
Students will have three months of coursework followed by three months of paid training at a long-term care home or in a home and community care establishment.
Additionally, 2200 students in an existing PSW program in Ontario colleges will be able to receive a grant of $2000 in order to help them complete their studies.
The program will be offered by all 24 of the province's publicly assisted colleges.
