It's considering a municipal services corporation
If you live in Port Colborne, there's a chance the amount you pay for water and wastewater services could go down.
The city is considering a municipal services corporation, which would be a separate organization, acting as a business, but run by the city.
It would keep services publicly owned, with a Board of Directors, while creating opportunities for greater efficiency, and bring more stable water rates, and even reductions.
The city says this comes after all the talk of amalgamation in Niagara, and recent public discussions in which people want reduced duplication.
There's also limited support for amalgamation.
The next steps include letting the provincial government know, and asking the Niagara region on how this would work.
Chief Administrative Officer Byran Boles says this is early-stage work, and no formal decision has been made.
