Police Services Board met with provincial government earlier this month, with more meetings planned
Niagara Regional police looking to target the gun, gang and violence problem in the region.
Police Services Board Chair Jen Lawson says they met with Ontario's Solicitor General earlier this month, asking for a plan to hold to account those that victimize Niagara communities.
"As a top priority we also ask that the Ministry promptly convene an expert panel of key stakeholders to develop a comprehensive plan of action moving forward to address prevention, and early intervention respecting mental health and addictions in the community."
She added further investment in community based mental health resources will reduce costs on police and hospital services.
"We ask for the immediate support for increased funding for community based mental health and addictions resources that respond more proactively, directly, and adequately to the mental health impacts occurring in Niagara... this includes the Ministries of Health, Housing and Employment."
More meetings are planned.
