Founder of CML Network optimistic for Niagara residents
Some good news for people in Niagara living with a rare type of blood cancer.... chronic myeloid leukemia.
Lisa Machado is Founder of Canada's CML Network, and says the latest drug Scemblix is changing this from a terminal illness to manageable.
She adds sometimes the cancer goes into remission. "I could actually try treatment free remission, but it's a whole other policy issue in that they don't pay for the monitoring here in Ontario. I would have to be monitored quite often if I stopped taking the medication, and that's not an option for me right now."
She was diagnosed in 2008, after looking into a bruise that wouldn't heal.
"Characterized by lots of white cells in your blood, and you need a medication, a type of chemo, to keep them in check."
She's been taking another drug since first diagnosed.
