Pfizer being recommended over Moderna for kids 6-11 says NACI.
The Moderna vaccine has been approved for use in children between the ages of 6 to 11.
Health Canada made the announcement on Monday. The National Advisory Committee on Immunization or NACI is still recommending that kids use the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.
They say the risk of heart inflammation in Moderna's child sized dose is unknown. NACI did say the adult dose has proven to carry a slightly higher risk of myocarditis than Pfizer. They also noted the risk is still very small and rare for adults.
NACI did say kids can be offered the Moderna dose, however the Pfizer dose is preferred for young children. Moderna has been proven to be more effective though for adults and NACI may recommend a three dose regiment of Moderna for immunocompromised children.
