MPP Presses Gov't on OSAP Changes

St. Catharines NDP MPP Jennie Stevens is asking the government to help students who she says are losing an education over OSAP changes.

She pointed to a 46-year old St. Catharines mother who went back to school.  "She worked hard, made sacrifices, and was just months away from graduating.  Now, she is living in a local shelter in St. Catharines, after her OSAP (Ontario Student Assistance Program) was ripped away."

Minister of Colleges and Universities Nolan Quinn says changes are needed.  "But wrong-doers have taken advantage of Ontario taxpayers and students.  We had to put a pause on the OSAP system until we have the confidence we need to ensure it's being utilized for its intended purpose."

He says he understands what this is doing to honest students.

Stevens then asked Premier Ford the same question.  "Angela isn't asking for a hand out, she's asking for an opportunity to finish her education she worked so hard to achieve.  She is a mother, she's 46-years old, she has made sacrifices."

Premier Ford responded.  "As soon as we get through these audits, she's going to have that opportunity.  Do you know what that opportunity is? She'll have an opportunity for a job, that we've created over 1-million jobs."
