First female U.S. Secretary of State dies of cancer.
Madeleine Albright, the first female U.S. Secretary of State, has died at the age of 84.
Her family released a statement, saying Albright died of cancer earlier today.
She served as Secretary of State from 1997 until 2001.
In 2012, Albright was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama.
Albright remained outspoken until the end, authoring an opinion piece on Russia's invasion of Ukraine in the New York Times last month.
She also wrote several books, including 2020's Hell and Other Destinations: A 21st-Century Memoir.
