Keeping Douglas Memorial Public is Goal: Mayor

Fort Erie Mayor Wayne Redekop says it's about convincing the province to help with the centre

Fort Erie's mayor says keeping Douglas Memorial urgent care centre open is the number one issue in the community.

During a meeting on Monday, town staff showed public health services they'd like to keep in the building, as a reimagined centre.

Mayor Wayne Redekop reiterated Niagara Health is closing it, but Fort Erie is not giving up.  "That's the challenge we're faced with... we're faced with having to persuade, not so much Niagara Health, but the provincial government that it makes more sense for them to keep a facility like Douglas Memorial operating, and to provide some specific services, than it does to allow it to be closed down."

He added privatizing is not an option, staying public.

"Putting together programs, and hiring consultants who will be assisting us to make sure we put together a program the government can accept.  But, we're trying to build relationships with the ministers and parliamentary assistants so they know when we come, and we're asking for something, there's something behind what we're asking for."

The whole council agreed the community rallying behind this is vital.
