Jeff Burch says Bill 164 will guarantee the safety of all vulnerable Ontarians.
The Niagara Centre MPP was happy to have support from all party's yesterday in order for his private members bill to pass a second reading.
He says the Protecting Vulnerable Persons in Supportive Living Accommodation Act would provide a framework and set a minimum standard for supportive housing across the province.
Anyone who operates one of these homes would also need to have a proper license.
Burch has heard a few horror stories about what currently goes on in some of these homes.
"Supportive living accommodations fill a critical need in communities all over the province but the lack of proper regulation with no minimum standard has resulted in suffering, deplorable conditions, and even death. Stories of lack of food, cockroach infestations, fire hazards and other dangers have been documented. This bill is designed to fix that, and to make supportive living accommodations a safe option for people who need help to live independently."
