21 year old facing charges after numerous dumpster and garbage bin fires in downtown core
A 21 year old St. Catharines man is facing 5 counts of arson after the NRP responded to reports of multiple fires in garbage bins in the downtown core early this morning.
Officers and St. Catharines Fire attended garbage bins and dumpster fires on King, Centre, Queenston, Niagara and Davidson Streets.
All the fires were extinguished without injury or significant damage to nearby structures.
Investigating officers in the area of Queenston Street near Geneva Street observed a man holding a lighter and a butane torch.
When questioned, the man took off on a bicycle and after a brief foot pursuit, officers arrested the man at 2:20am.
Tyler McKelvey has been arrested and charged with 5 counts of arson - damage to property and was being held in custody for bail hearing today.
District detectives are also investigating three dumpster fires that occurred in the early morning hours of June 2 in St. Catharines.
Two of which occurred on Ontario Street near Scott Street and one on St. Paul Street.
