A message from the Mayor of Welland to the family of a child that was sexually assaulted at home this weekend... you have the unwavering support of your community.
A 25-year old Welland man has been charged, after police say he broke in sometime overnight, and left the child, under 5-years old, with serious injuries.
That child is in stable condition.
Mayor Frank Campion says as a parent, he cannot begin to imagine the pain this family is living through, and to think of a young child being harmed this way shakes every parent to their core.
To the family, the mayor says your privacy, safety and healing are of the utmost importance.
He calls this a horrific act that is impossible to fathom.
The mayor is also grateful to the Welland emergency crews that first showed up Sunday morning, and their quick action that helped catch the suspect.
He also says the city will work with other levels of government to ensure these criminals are severely dealt with by the courts, and kept off the streets, as it will not be tolerated.
