A World War II era artillery shell discovered in Niagara-on-the-Lake has been destroyed by the NRP's Explosives Disposal Unit.
The shell was found by a member of the public around 4:45 p.m. yesterday near Lakeshore Road and Old Lakeshore Road.
The resident, who is a retired police officer, had been using a bathyscope - an underwater viewing device - in the shallows of Lake Ontario.
The shell was found about 50 feet into the water.
Members of the NRP's Explosive Disposal Unit found the shell had deteriorated significantly over time, and around 9:00 p.m., explosives were used to destroy it.
Officers warn that the area west of Niagara-on-the-Lake was used for training during the World War 2 era, and members who spot possible explosives or ammunition should call 911 and refrain from touching it.
