Expert says all levels of governments need to protect citizens during extreme heat alerts
An extreme weather expert is calling for cooling to be treated as a human right.
Blair Feltmate, who is the head of the Intact Centre on Climate Adaptation, says all levels of government need to come together to protect vulnerable populations during extreme heat alerts.
He also says due to climate change, the country is getting higher daily temperatures and longer heat waves, which can be deadly during heat events.
He recommends subsidies for portable air conditioners for low-income earners, and backup electricity generation for apartment buildings.
Over the past week, much of Ontario was under a heat warning, with the humidex around 40 degrees Celsius in some areas.
