It's Executive Director believes in rehabilitation, but not for some
It is not a good day for victims in Canada... that from the Kristen French Child Advocacy Centre after a bill to keep killers like Paul Bernardo in maximum security failed.
Niagara Falls Conservative MP Tony Baldinelli's bill was defeated this week by Liberal, NDP and Bloc Quebecois MPs.
Executive Director Brian Bratt is hearing disappointment from many people, adding this shakes confidence in the system.
He adds some politicians try to put this on Corrections Canada. "Certainly these types of things don't necessarily pass the sniff test. People look at these types of moves and think there has to be a better way. So, voters remember."
He says it's not just the handling of Paul Bernardo's case that has shaken people.
Still though, he believes in rehabilitation.
He points to a desperate 19-year old making a mistake robbing a convenience store. "It's a far cry from someone who is a serial rapist, who is a convicted murderer. There are, unfortunately, some folks who cannot be rehabilitated."
He says politicians must admit there's no chance for someone like Paul Bernardo.
