Motion asks for court proceedings to speed up, and to hire private investigators
A request to be sent to the Ontario government by the City of Thorold to improve how intimate partner violence is dealt with.
Councillor Carmen DeRose's motion asks for many things, including speeding up court processes, and allowing courts to contract licenced private investigators.
He added intimate partner violence destroys families. "It's effects reach far beyond survivors, harming children, communities, and society as a whole. The persistence of this violence shows that current measures are not enough, this motion strengthens prevention, protects survivors, and sends a clear message that abuse in intimate relationships will not be tolerated."
But, Councillor Tim O'Hare was concerned with a section dealing with temporary detention of individuals until police arrive.
"There is wording in here, particularly item #5, that I think can insight vigilantism. This is something I'm a little nervous about, I don't think this is a step we should be taking."
The motion also asks that private investigators will document cases of harrassment.
