About 50 firefighters responded to a fire at an auto body shop in Thorold, in the Ormond Street and St. David’s Street East area.
Fire Chief Terry Dixon says they were able to prevent the fire from spreading to other buildings yesterday, but the damage is still estimated at about $500,000.
He says the cause is believed to be electrical, relating to an exhaust fan motor.
Dixon says two firefighters had to be treated for heat exhaustion by Niagara EMS and they were sent home afterwards.
Members of the public were told to shelter in place for a couple of hours due to the smoke.
The Ministry of the Environment had to be called in and the Ontario Fire Marshall has been notified.
