A local mayor wants the province to provide support to the wine industry in Ontario.
St. Catharines Mayor Walter Sendzik introduced a motion yesterday at Niagara Region's Planning and Economic Development Committee.
The motion is calling on the province to make some changes in the wine industry in regards to innovation and job creation.
It suggests reforms such as enabling Ontario wines to offer direct delivery to grocery stores, and removing inter-provincial trade barriers related to the sale of wines across provincial borders.
Sendzik says the reforms could have benefits for Niagara.
"I can’t think of an industry that’s more rooted than the grape and wine industry here in Niagara. The Ontario wine industry supports, directly and indirectly, more than 18,000 full-time equivalent jobs, and Niagara is Ontario’s largest wine-growing region responsible for more than 90 per cent of the province’s grape production."
The motion still needs Council approval.
