NRP also acknowledged city for work it has done to address crime
Reassurance from the NRP to St. Catharines city council that a police storefront, or office, will be set up in the downtown.
Chief Bill Fordy, and other officers, spoke to council last night, noting efforts to stabilize problems in the downtown that have worked.
The Chief also applauded something the city has done. "Is you have started to take a position on vacant houses, homes that are unsightly, and invite social disorder. I've done 3 affidavits in support of the city."
Police stats show social disorder and mental health calls far exceed traffic problems or property crime.
The Chief added the perception of feeling safe is huge.
He also says greater police presence is the #1 thing he's asked about, always, anywhere he goes, while they balance shifting priorities, with government legislation. "It's the perfect storm. In the last 2 years our increases have been significant, and unfortunately I can see that for another year or 2, before we hit the place where we need to be."
A number of councillors have been on patrols with police, and applaud them for their efforts.
