It's a plant based product showing promise in some Ontario roads
There's been unanimous support at St. Catharines city council to look further into a plant based bioresin for road construction and maintenance.
Founder of Cambridge based Bio Diffusion Technologies Tyler Whale told council Monday night the bioresin strengthened a Centre Wellington County road by 20% in a test.
"This is a complex blend of resins, and chemistries, turpines, organic acids, that kind of thing, from a variety of different plants. Some come from forestry, some come from agriculture, but it tends to be waste from these industries."
He added other Ontario municipalities are looking at this, as well as the provincial government, but also globally.
"We have also done some testing in Puslinch Township. We have a number of conversations with different municipalities around Ontario who are ready to use this resin in 2024, and considering expansion in 2025, assuming the projects go well."
Council has asked city staff to bring back a report by end of September.
