NRP Chief calls out immense amount of misinformation
A rebuke from the Chief of Niagara Regional police over coverage of the closure of the Canada/US border this week.
Bryan MacCulloch stressed to a police services board meeting yesterday the importance of getting information from official sources of information.
"We saw an immense amount of misinformation and speculation on both mainstream and social media platforms, which caused significant, and I'll say, unnecessary anxiety."
The Chief was pleased with how his officers and staff responded to maintaining order in the region, while not knowing what was happening at the time.
He also pointed to the consequences of rampant social media speculation. "We also saw how an incident like this can very quickly attract wide scale international attention."
The NRP adds it can never keep up with public and media requests for information.
