Funeral service for OPP officer Grzegorz Pierzchala held today
A fallen OPP officer has been laid to rest.
A funeral service was held today for 28 year old Grzegorz "Greg" Pierzchala, a rookie OPP officer who was killed in an ambush last week.
Speakers included his sister, Justyna Pierzchala, who says her brother "died as a hero and lived as an inspiration."
His brother Michal also addressed mourners, speaking of the bravery shown by police officers.
"Greg was the most courageous person I knew. He was always doing challenging things that he was afraid of. But courage is not about never being afraid. It's about doing things despite being afriad. And it's really a defining quality of all the police officers that are willing to risk their lives for us every day."
His family was joined by members of the Canadian Armed Forces, Premier Doug Ford, the OPP and other police and emergency services personnel.
Pierzchala, who was an OPP officer for Haldimand County, was shot to death on December 27th near Hagersville.
He was killed while responding to a vehicle in a ditch.
Earlier that day, Pierzchala discovered he had successfully completed his probationary period with the force.
Two people, a 25 year old man and a 30 year old woman, are facing first degree murder charges.
