New system to license short term rentals to begin in January.
Operators of short-term rentals in St. Catharines can soon apply for licenses.
The City says starting January 4th, applications from operators in Wards 5 and 6 will be reviewed, followed by Wards 3 and 4 on February 1st, and Wards 1 and 2 on March 1st.
All properties can apply for licensing on January 4th, but submissions won't be reviewed until the date associated with the Ward the property is located in has passed.
Earlier this year, Council approved a Licensing and Administrative Monetary Penalty System for short-term rentals (STRs).
The new tools compliment by-law amendments the City made in 2020 that redefined STRs as home-based businesses.
The by-law establishes a demerit point system associated with various infractions ranging from Fire and Building Code violations to waste, parking and noise related issues.
Infractions range from two to ten points, and will remain active against a license for two years, with penalties including license suspension, incurred depending on demerit point totals.
The City will also launch a STR hotline to allow residents to report STRs that are violating by-laws or operating illegally.
