Niagara Chamber of Commerce explained how eliminating interprovincial trade barriers will help Canadian economy
An update from the Greater Niagara Chamber of Commerce to the region of how its working to help businesses endure Trump tariffs.
Director of Policy Hugo Chesshire says their website has information of tariffed products.
He also made the case for eliminating interprovincial trade barriers. "We grow tender fruit in Niagara, where it gets inspected, put in a truck and shipped to another province. When it gets there it gets inspected again... Why? If a plumber or electrician comes to us from Alberta, even though they are certified in skilled trades, they need to get certified again when they get to Ontario... Why?"
He adds there's greater collaboration with the Hamilton, Windsor-Essex, Chatham-Kent and Buffalo-Niagara chambers of commerce.
He also acknowledged continued uncertainty among businesses. "Most of them fall into one of two categories, which is either 'I know how this is going to impact me and I'm really concerned'. Or 'I don't know how this will impact me, or what I can really do about it'. So, the first thing we've launched is a trade and tariff resource page."
He says that page gives more information of products hit by tariffs and how tariffs may impact a business.
