Various Niagara councils have voted to prohibit waterpipe smoking in certain areas
The Niagara region is set to protect residents from second hand smoke from waterpipes.
The new by-law starts New Year's Day, after regional and municipal councils approved it, prohibiting waterpipe smoking in enclosed public spaces and workplaces, outdoor public patios, within nine metres of a public entrance or exit, and outdoor public places such as parks and beaches.
Niagara's acting medical officer of health says just like cigarettes, waterpipe smoking, whether tobacco or other products, releases toxins into the air that is harmful through second hand smoke, as well as the person smoking.
There are similar by-laws in Peel, Halton, Toronto and Ottawa.
