Police say 59-year old man has been charged with attempted murder

Police have charged 59-year old Daniel Tronko with attempted murder, and say further charges are pending.
Further to the story outlined below, police learned who they were dealing with, and called in Hamilton, Halton and Peel police to help.
They say they tried to negotiate with Tronko throughout the day and overnight, and at various times sent in remote cameras into the building. In every case, the suspect fired at the cameras and destroyed them, police saying this demonstrated a disregard for public and officer safety.
Following his arrest, police say he was taken to an out-of-region hospital.
Police Chief Bill Fordy is giving high praise to every officer involved, noting this was successfully resolved due to the professionalism and coordinated efforts of each member.
He also thanks every police leader, elected official, and member of the public that sent messages of support to the team that brought this to a conclusion.
Niagara Regional Chair Bob Gale issued a statement offering his thanks and appreciation to police involved, but also to every community group for coordinated effort to keep everyone safe.
Mayor Frank Campion also released a statement, foremost thanking emergency crews for their efforts, but also the City of Welland and other organizations for adapting to this situation. He says cancelling or disrupting daily operations are decisions never taken lightly, guided by facts and available information, to keep everyone safe.
Update: 8:30am Saturday
Police have posted to X the man has been taken into custody.
This happened at roughly 7:30 this morning, there were no further injuries.
Police add there's no longer a threat to public safety, therefore a lockdown for the surrounding neighbourhood has been lifted, and the roads are open.
That's all police have said to this point, further detail will be released.
As for the officer who was shot, she has since been released from hospital.

Police have evacuated staff from Plymouth Public School, and St. Mary Catholic Elementary School. They also say the hold and secure has been lifted at the Welland hospital.

A police officer has been shot as the NRP deal with an active shooting in Welland this morning.
Officers were called a scene on Second Street, in the Plymouth Road and Lincoln Street area, to reports of a shooting, and as they got there, the officer was hit by gunfire.
Constable Rich Hingley tells us it started as NRP officers were called to help by-law officer enforcement. Not long after, the suspect began firing at police, the officer was shot in the chest.
Hingley credits her body armour, as she was sent to hospital with what's considered non life-threatening injuries.
Police add the suspect has been contained inside a building, as they work to have him surrender.
The NRP have put all schools and the hospital on lockdown.
They're asking you to avoid the area of Lincoln Street to the north, King Street to the west, Third Street to the south, and Coventry to the east.
This story reached Premier Doug Ford, who made mention of it while in Buffalo this morning making announcement about nuclear energy.
He began his remarks indicating the police officer was shot in the chest, but she is doing ok in hospital.
