Bit of concern from Pelham's mayor over the state of water and wastewater infrastructure through the Niagara region.
Marvin Junkin says Pelham just passed its water and wastewater rates for 2024, resulting in an increase of $87.
He adds the region passes its rate to municipalities, who then tack on their rate to the region's rate to the customer. "I know at the Region, we had a presentation that 45% of our infrastructure is now rated in poor condition. They're going to have to have 7 or 8-percent increases, hopefully, we can get some of this infrastructure replaced."
He's hoping the region can get that 45% down to 10 or 15%, or there will be problems.
Mayor Junkin says inflation is not helping to keep costs down. "To make sure we have the infrastructure in place to deliver clean drinking water, as dictated by the provincial water act, for lack of a better name."
