Ontario is going to pause first doses of the Oxford Astra-Zeneca vaccine over concerns around blood clots.
Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. David Williams made the announcement during a press briefing this afternoon. New data suggests the risk of blood clots from Astra-Zeneca is higher then previously thought at 1 in 60,000.
This is not expected to impact the vaccine rollout in Ontario thanks to increased supply from Pfizer and Moderna.
The Province is currently reviewing data for second doses and it is possible those who got the first shot of Astra-Zeneca could end up with a second dose from Pfizer or Moderna. According to recent data, the risk of blood clots from the second dose of Astra-Zeneca is much smaller.
Dr. Williams did say anyone who already received the first dose of Astra-Zeneca did the right thing and this decision was made out of an abundance of caution. He notes the increased supply of Moderna and Pfizer helped make this an easier decision.
