Current HST exemption for prepared foods at $4.
The Ontario Liberals are proposing a plan to remove the provincial portion of the HST from prepared food purchases under $20.
Leader Steven Del Duca says if passed, the measure would help families buying rotisserie chicken at the grocery store or workers buying lunch from local restaurants save cash.
Del Duca also notes the move would be paid for by implementing a two percent income tax on individuals earning over $500,000 per year, and a one percent surtax on corporations operating in Ontario earning more than $1 billion per year.
As well, the Liberals plan to create a new tax bracket of 15.16 percent on individual income above the $500,000 per year threshold.
The party says this would generate over $350 million in annual revenue.
