Chief giving credit to community groups, for greater awareness, but also taking preventative measures
Some encouraging news at Niagara police services board meeting last week concerning the number of robberies.
Board member Kevin Gibson noted there were 121 last year, as opposed to 186 the previous year.
When asked why, Chief Bill Fordy credited the community. "What we believe is that through community engagement, and the general public becoming better informed, and putting crime reduction measures in place, we've had a reduction in that specific crime type."
The highest number was in 2020 with 198, in 2021, there were 154.
Gibson wondered if the force is doing something different, or if it's an anomaly.
The Chief admitted nothing comes to mind in terms of enforcement, to this point. "As this board knows, we're moving to enhance the services provided by our criminal analyst, to be more strategic, so we're more intelligence led, which should enhance our service delivery, and we're targeting the right people at the right time."
