It voted unanimously to keep pushing the Ontario government to keep Douglas Memorial open
Niagara regional council has voted unanimously to keep advocating the provincial government that it keep Fort Erie's urgent care centre operating.
Mayor Wayne Redekop specified they want Douglas Memorial working after the new South Niagara hospital opens as a safety net for care, until a suitable alternative is found.
"I've been dealing with this issue since 1997. I'll spare everyone the gory details of that road that we've been on from a fully operational hospital, to an urgent care centre, to half an urgent care centre."
He adds they'll keep working with Port Colborne since that community is impacted, as well as Fort Erie's Indigenous population, which represents 5% of the town's population.
"Until we can get a long-term solution in Fort Erie, we need that urgent care centre. Some of you will know people in your community who have gone to urgent care centres in Fort Erie and Port Colborne. It is an outlet, and a very important aspect."
He says members of Niagara Health sit on Fort Erie's Health Care Service's Committee.
