Provincial government spending $215-million to support the industry and marine sector, meaning more training, equipment purchases
The provincial government used the Port Weller docks as the scene for a $215-million investment announcement into Ontario's ship building and marine sector.
Transport Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria, joined by many dignitaries this morning, said this includes a $15-million shipbuilding grant program, to increase competitiveness and modernized the industry. It'll also support more training, and equipment purchases.
He stressed the importance of this against US tariffs. "If we can unlock the potential in the marine sector, and foster economic development right here in St. Catharines, and all across the province, and strengthening Ontario's marine transportation sector will enhance our province's competitiveness."
He adds Ontario's marine transportation sector moves up to 63-million tonnes of goods annually.
Niagara regional chair Jim Bradley added the region has a long history in ship building. "The marine sector in Niagara directly supports 238 business accounts, for over 5000 jobs, and has a direct real GDP impact of $510-million. In 2024, over 3,500 vessels travelled the Welland Canal."
It was noted the federal government is increasing defense spending as per NATO agreement.
