Niagara Health's Essential Care Partner Program has reached a milestone.
Since introducing the program four months ago, 1,600 residents have been trained to become ECPs.
ECPs provide support in areas such as decision-making, eating, and communicating behaviour changes to hospital staff.
The program was started in order to provide patients with the support of loved ones while in hospital.
Patients who have been admitted for over a week or have a pre-planned surgery are eligible for an ECP.
Before being designated, ECP complete a formal orientation, and they must follow all infection and control guidelines while at the hospital.
Patients can speak with their health care team in order to request and designate an ECP.
