The city's GM of Public Works says they're put in the hole, traffic pushes them in
It's that time of the year again when we do our best to avoid potholes while driving, anywhere, not just Niagara.
Niagara Falls GM of Public Works Erik Nickel tells us the city is about to try something new for patching, pothole patch packs.
He says a city worker parks in front of a pothole, then places a number of bags into the hole. "A lot of times it'll take 10 to 12 packs, so you can layer them so they don't come out, when you hit them with your tire. Then, as traffic comes through, the pothole packs will settle into the pothole."
He can't speak of the cost yet, as this is a trial run.
The idea is the bag holds the material in, instead of loose gravel pushed out by traffic and weather. "They're not a solution that are going to solve all of our problems, but for emergencies, and where we have high volume roads, that can be patched right away, I'd rather get them patched so we can avoid damage to tires, rims, or even collisions."
He says this will start once plows are not needed, which could push the packs out.
